PAPER I

  1.   2. Ecology: (a) Biosphere — destruction and conservation of natural habitats and their fauna; endangered species of India, conservation strategies, sustainable development. (b) Community ecology — habitat, niche, population, ecological succession, community structure and organization. (c) Ecosystem — biotic and abiotic factors, energy flow, food chain, food web, ecological pyramids, biogeochemical cycles. (d) Population dynamics. (e) Environmental biodegradation, pollution and its impact on biosphere and its prevention. (f) Wildlife of India, sanctuaries and national parks of India, Project Tiger.
  3. Ethology: (a) Behaviour — sensory filtering, responsiveness, sign stimuli, learning and memory, instinct, habituation, conditioning, imprinting. (b) Role of hormones in drive; role of pheromones in alarm spreading; crypsis, predator detection, predator tactics, social behaviour in insects and primates, courtship (fish, birds).
  4. Economic Zoology: (a) Apiculture, sericulture, lac culture, carp breeding and culture, pearl culture, prawn culture. (b) Major infectious and communicable diseases (malaria, filaria, tuberculosis, cholera, AIDS) of man and their vectors, pathogens and prophylaxis. (c) Cattle and livestock diseases, their pathogens (helminths) and vectors (ticks, mites, Tabanus, Stomoxys). (d) Pests of sugar cane (Pyrilla perpusiella), oil seed (Achaea janata) and rice (Sitophilus oryzae).
  5. Biostatistics: designing of experiments; null hypothesis; correlation, regression, distribution and measure of central tendency, chi-square, student t-test, F-test (one-way & two-way), ANOVA.
  6. Instrumental methods: (a) Spectrophotometry — atomic absorption and emission spectroscopy. (b) Chromatography, electrophoresis, ultracentrifugation.

PAPER II

  1. Cell Biology: (a) Structure and function of cell and its organelles (nucleus, plasma membrane, mitochondria, Golgi bodies, endoplasmic reticulum, ribosomes and lysosomes), cell division (mitosis and meiosis), mitotic spindle and mitotic apparatus, chromosome movements. (b) Watson-Crick model of DNA, replication of DNA, protein synthesis, transcription and transcription factors.
  2. Genetics: (a) Modern concept of gene, split genes, genetic regulation, genetic code. (b) Sex chromosomes and sex determination in Drosophila and man. (c) Mendel's laws of inheritance, recombination, linkage, multiple alleles, genetics of blood groups, pedigree analysis, hereditary diseases in man. (d) Mutations and mutagenesis — radiation and chemical. (e) Recombinant DNA technology, plasmids, transposons, gene transfer, gene cloning, gene therapy, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), transgenic animals. (f) Cloning of animals; human genome project; DNA fingerprinting. (g) Gene mapping and hybridoma technology. (h) Genetic engineering and its applications in agriculture, medicine and industry. (i) Cytoplasmic inheritance in Drosophila. (j) Genetics of eye colour in Drosophila; polygenic inheritance.
  3. Evolution: (a) Theories of origin of life. (b) Principles of evolution, natural selection, artificial selection, adaptive radiation, Hardy-Weinberg law. (c) Micro-evolution, macro-evolution, sources of variations, isolating mechanisms, speciation, extinction. (d) Fossils, outline of geological eras, phylogeny of horse and elephant, origin and evolution of man, continental drift and distribution of animals.
  4. Systematics: (a) Zoological nomenclature, international code, cladistics.
  5. Biochemistry: (a) Structure and role of carbohydrates, fats, fatty acids, proteins and amino acids, nucleic acids and their metabolism. (b) Glycolysis and Krebs cycle, oxidation and reduction, oxidative phosphorylation, energy conservation and release, ATP cycle, cyclic AMP — its structure and role. (c) Hormone classification, biosynthesis and functions; enzymes — mechanism of action; vitamins — types and functions. (d) Immunoglobulins and immunity; steroids.
  6. Physiology (with special reference to mammals): (a) Composition and constituents of blood, blood groups and Rh factor in man; coagulation of blood; haemoglobin — its structure and function; blood pigments. (b) Digestion and absorption of carbohydrates, fats and proteins; role of enzymes, salivary and gastric juice, and role of liver. (c) Respiration and its regulation; transport of gases. (d) Excretion — nephron and regulation of urine formation; osmoregulation. (e) Nerve impulse, its conduction and synaptic transmission; neurotransmitters. (f) Vision, hearing and olfaction in man. (g) Types of muscles, mechanism of contraction of skeletal muscle. (h) Structure and function of different endocrine glands, hormones and their regulation.
  7. Developmental Biology: (a) Gametogenesis, fertilization, cleavage, gastrulation, fate maps, cell lineage. (b) Morphogenesis and morphogenetic movements; embryonic induction, organizers. (c) Development of amphioxus, frog and chick up to formation of germ layers; metamorphosis in frog and insects; extra-embryonic membranes in birds; placenta in mammals. (d) Regeneration; ageing; stem cells; teratogenesis; in vitro fertilization; cell differentiation.
