📥 NCERT / CBSE BOOKS — Official Free Downloads + What to Read for UPSC
NCERTs are the foundation of UPSC preparation. Read them first, before any standard book. They are published by the government and are free to download from the official sources below.
Official download sources (bookmark these)
- NCERT textbook PDFs (Class I–XII): ncert.nic.in/textbook.php — select Class → Subject → Book Title, then download the chapter PDFs or the full book.
- ePathshala (flipbook + ePub + app): epathshala.nic.in — the same books as flipbooks and downloadable ePub; also an Android/iOS app for offline reading.
- DIKSHA: diksha.gov.in — NCERT content, explainer videos, QR-linked resources.

Old vs new editions: for Ancient & Medieval History, many toppers prefer the old NCERTs (RS Sharma; Satish Chandra) — richer for UPSC. For everything else, the current editions on the portal are fine.
How to actually read the NCERTs (don't just collect them)
1. Read Class VI → XII in order for each subject (junior builds the senior).
2. First pass: READ ONLY. No notes. Understand the flow.
3. Second pass: underline + make 1-page notes OR just revise from this site's
subject notes (which already digest the NCERTs).
4. Test: after each book, do that subject's PYQs on this site.
Time budget: the full UPSC-relevant NCERT set is ~35–40 booklets. At a steady pace this is 6–8 weeks for the first pass. Do not let it stretch to months — the NCERT stage is a foundation, not the finish line.

UPSC's syllabus is built on the NCERT framework, so NCERT books are what you need — not CBSE guidebooks, private notes, or reference guides. Use the official NCERT downloads above; treat everything else as optional supplements.
